The WNBA's race for Rookie of the Year is getting hotter as the leading candidates, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, are making noise. The young stars have sparked conversation on which among them is the better player. Sports radio host Nick Wright discussed the award debate on Tuesday, predicting the winner.
Clark and Reese have dominated the competition for the prize since the beginning of the season. The Indiana Fever rookie started slow but has slowly picked up the pace. The Chicago Sky forward, on the other hand, has broken rebounding records and has dominated the glass.
On the "What’s Wright? with Nick Wright" show, he said:
"Folks have bent over backward to try to explain why what Angel [Reese] is doing, which is spectacular, is on par with what Caitlin [Clark] is doing, which is historic. And it's just not. ...
"It's just embarrassing. We have to be able to have honest conversations about sports even if it goes against some of our priors or some of our allies on the internet. ... There should be two unanimous awards in the WNBA this year. The MVP should be unanimous to A'ja Wilson. Rookie of the Year should be unanimous to Caitlin Clark."
This goes against what former star Lisa Leslie shared on social media on Sunday. Leslie believes that Clark and Reese should be co-winners of the award because of what they've done as individual players.
Caitlin Clark won WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week award again
For the week of Aug. 26 to Sept. 1, the league's Eastern Conference Player of the Week was awarded to Caitlin Clark. This is the second straight week she's been given the award.
Last week, Clark led Indiana to a 4-0 record, averaging 24.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 9.0 assists and 1.3 steals. The rookie has also improved her shooting, making 48.0% of her shots from the field and 41.5% of her 3-pointers.
