Jonquel Jones was born in Freeport, Bahamas on January 5, 1994. She was the sixth overall pick by the Los Angeles Sparks in the 2016 WNBA Draft. However, she was acquired by the Connecticut Sun when the Sparks traded her draft rights in exchange for Chelsea Gray and two draft picks on April 10, 2016. As of August 2024, she is a power forward for the New York Liberty. Jonquel Jones won the 2023 WNBA Commissioner's Cup Championship with her team, the New York Liberty, and was the championship’s MVP. She was honored as the Atlantic-10 Player of the Year and the Atlantic-10 Defensive Player of the Year in 2015. Jones was recognized as the 2019 WNBA Blocks Leader and the WNBA Rebounding Leader thrice in 2017, 2019, and 2021. She was named the WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year in 2018. She also received the WNBA Peak Performer and the WNBA Most Improved Player Award in 2017. The 6-foot-6-inch Jones was the 2021 WNBA MVP.

Jones played basketball overseas, including in the Women’s Korean Basketball League in the 2016-2017 season. She won the championship along with her team, Asan Woori Bank Woori Won, and was named the WKBL Foreign MVP and WKBL Defensive Player of The Year in 2017. Additionally, she played for the Shanxi Xing Rui Flame in the Women's Chinese Basketball Association, BC UMMC Ekaterinburg in the Russian League, and the Çukurova Basketbol Kulübü in the Turkish Women's Basketball Super League. She represented the Bosnia and Herzegovina Women's National Basketball Team in the FIBA EuroBasket Women in 2021. However, in 2022 her coach Goran Lojo, announced that Jones would no longer play for the team in national basketball.
