Chicago Sky's Brazilian sensation Kamilla Cardoso was a valuable asset to the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team from 2021 to 2024. She won the National Championships with the Gamecocks in her first year as a sophomore in the 2021/22 season and then again in 2024 as a senior. At a towering height of 6 feet 7 inches, Kardoso was highly effective as the center for Gamecocks. Her rebounding skills and shot-blocking skills have made her reliable for her team.

Kamilla Cardoso has also proved herself as an impressive scorer during her games. Her presence in the paint area proves to be challenging for the opponents. Last season with the South Carolina Gamecocks, while participating in 36 games, Kamilla Cardoso scored 9.8 points along with 8.5 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game. She also shot 55.9% from the field. Kamilla Cardoso has been declared the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, USBWA First Team All-American member and AP Second Team All-American member in 2024.

Eventually, Chicago Sky drafted Cardoso with the seventh overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft.

Before that, Cardoso had a college basketball career at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York where she played 24 games and scored 13.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game. She shot 57.6% from the field. For her efforts, she became the ACC Freshman of the Year, ACC co-Defensive Player of the Year, ACC All-Freshman Team member, and ACC All-Defensive Team member in 2021.

However, Cardoso entered the transfer portal after head coach Quentin Hillsman resigned from the position in August 2021, after multiple players accused him of bullying, threats, inappropriate behavior, and physical contact without permission. Eventually, Kamilla Cardoso transfer was done to the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina, United States.

Kamilla Cardoso’s College Basketball Career After Transfer

Kamilla Cardoso has been highly successful with the South Carolina Gamecocks. In her first sophomore year with the team in the 2021/22 season, she won the National Championship. She continued her consistency throughout her junior 2022/23 season and earned SEC Sixth Woman of the Year and Second Team All-SEC member honors in 2023. Then, again in her fourth and final year, Cardoso won the NCAA championship.

Kamilla Cardoso’s Early Basketball Career

Kamilla Cardoso started her early basketball career by playing varsity girl’s basketball for the Hamilton Heights Christian Academy Hawks in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States. She was highly successful as a senior in the 2019/20 season with 17.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.0 steals and 5.0 blocks per game.

After her high school career, ESPN regarded her as the 5th best player in her class and a five-star recruit. She graduated from her high school in 2020. Cardoso also became a MacDonald’s All-American in 2020.
