The WNBA resumes action on Thursday with a slate of games including a matchup between the New York Liberty and the LA Sparks. After the month-long break to give way to the Olympics, the teams continue their goal of grabbing a playoff spot. New York (21-4), owner of the best record in the entire league, will try to keep itself ahead of the pack with a win.

Meanwhile, the Sparks still have a slim chance of barging into the postseason if they have a good second half. They are 10th in the standings with a 6-18 mark, 4.5 games behind the Chicago Sky (10-14) for the eighth final ticket to the playoffs.

Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart, fresh off their gold-medal-winning campaign in the Olympics, will lead the Liberty. The Sparks will count on Dearica Hamby, who won bronze in the women’s 3x3 contest, Azura Stevens and rookie Rickea Jackson.

The LA Sparks will be undermanned when they go up against the Liberty. Lexie Brown is out for the rest of the season due to Chron’s Disease. Cameron Brink, who tore her ACL in mid-June, will be in street clothes cheering for her team.

Julie Allemand, who hasn’t seen action this year for personal reasons, is not with the team.

New York Liberty vs LA Sparks: Game preview

The New York Liberty leads the WNBA in offensive and net rating. New York's defensive efficiency isn't too shabby either as it is fourth in the league in that category. These are obvious reasons they went into the Olympic break with the best record in the league.

An upset is always possible but it will be an uphill climb for the Sparks who lost Cameron Brink, their defensive anchor. Los Angeles needs to play much better to earn its first win of the season against New York.
