Wanda Sykes is a legend in the world of both comedy and acting. She broke onto the scene in 1987 and has amassed a net worth of $10 million according to celebritynetworth.com. The Hollywood star is looking to begin a new venture and she and her wife, Alex Sykes are leading the charge to establish a new WNBA team in Philadelphia.
According to the Philly Voice, Wanda Sykes was part of a press conference that announced that the 76ers and Comcast Spectator are working together to build a new arena in South Philadelphia's sports complex. Sykes's involvement in the project will also involve her being the voice for a new WNBA team to be brought to the city.
"Watching games, my wife would always ask me, 'Why isn't there a team in Philadelphia?'" Sykes said during Monday's press conference. "And she asked me so much, I said, 'Why don't you make it happen?' And that's when I learned, don't challenge my wife."
The couple were very supportive of the announcement made on Monday, working closely with members of the Philadelphia government to get their idea off the ground. Mayor Cherelle Parker is a part of the group leading this initiative that includes Comcast, the 76ers, and the city.
The Philly Voice reported that Sykes and her group had approached film stars like Kevin Hart and Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith to support their cause.
"You told me that in addition to ensuring that the 76ers continue to play in a world-class arena in Philadelphia, you expressed a strong desire to bring a WNBA team to the city," NBA commisioner Adam Silver said as he joined the press conference through a video call. "I'm pleased to hear that several of our WNBA supporters are with you all today."
When could Wanda Sykes introduce the Philadelphia Sisters to the WNBA?
WNBA commissioner Cathy Englebert is preparing to introduce the league's 13th team this season, the Golden State Valkyries. Next year, the league plans to debut teams in Portland and Toronto in the next phase of their expansion project.
Wanda Sykes has faith that the team which they have christened the Philadelphia Sisters is in the best position to secure a spot. She said on Monday at the press conference:
"I don't think our odds could be any more favorable than the position we're in right now."
She is optimistic that a Philadelphia team will lead the list of potential new additions to the WNBA in 2027 or 2028.
