There is anticipation surrounding Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier's "Unrivaled" basketball, with Angel Reese set to become the latest WNBA star to join the three-on-three league. The league's social media account shared the announcement on X, formerly known as "Twitter." It is set to debut in January 2025, with other stars expected to perform as well.
The league project of Stewart and Collier will offer an incredible experience for participating athletes as it will involve the highest average salary in the history of professional women's basketball. Compensation has been one of the pressing issues surrounding the WNBA, with athletes looking for other avenues to increase their earnings.
With this upcoming three-on-three league still a few months away, Angel Reese couldn't contain her excitement.
"305 BARBIEEEEE," Reese posted. "See ya'll in the yams."
The Chicago Sky rookie has easily been a standout this season with her high motor on the court as an imposing double-double machine. Angel Reese was one of the rookies in her class that fans were eagerly anticipating to arrive in the WNBA with what she brought to the court at the collegiate level with LSU.
In the 23 games that she's played in the WNBA, she has successfully translated her game into the pros with not many adjustments made. She is averaging 13.5 points (40.2% shooting, including 20.0% from beyond the arc) and 12.0 rebounds per game.
To bring that kind of production, coupled with how she carries herself on the court, to Unrivaled, are two reasons why Angel Reese will be a welcome addition to what Stewart and Collier are trying to accomplish.
Aside from the salary, Stewart and Collier highlighted the importance of including an equity stake for the players involved. With several high-profile investors such as former NBA stars Carmelo Anthony and Steve Nash, UConn women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma, etc., the goal remains clear: the league will provide a much-needed alternative to WNBA players' compensation issues.
Angel Reese talks about using influences in the WNBA to improve her craft
There are several athletes in the WNBA who all have a unique style to their game that young players can take something from. In Angel Reese's first year, she revealed her process of studying the games of Breanna Stewart, Tina Charles, DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas to add bits of improvement to her development, as per ClutchPoints' Christopher Smith.
"I think I'm trying to take pieces from everybody," Reese said. "... Tina [Charles], taking my time around the basket. Being super versatile like Breanna Stewart, DeWanna Bonner ... the competitiveness of Alyssa Thomas."
Aside from being able to study how premier athletes perform in the big league, it is also an incredible achievement for Reese to be placed in that position in the first place.
Not many young and aspiring basketball players have the opportunity to go up against their idols on the court and leave with new pieces of knowledge to take into one's growth. When it comes to "Chi Barbie," she isn't wasting that opportunity.
