While Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese may still be on their rookie deals, both players will likely be under contract through 2028. If the Fever and the Sky pick up their team options in 2027, both players are already on the radar of WNBA legend Cynthia Cooper.

Cooper was among many in the WNBA community to support Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta's plan to revive the Houston Comets.

While several cities want to be home to the WNBA's next expansion team after the creation of the Golden State Valkyries and the Toronto Tempo, Houston seems like a strong contender given the history of the Comets.

In an interview with The Houston Chronicle, Cynthia Cooper spoke about the situation, saying that she believes Houston fans would get behind a movement to try and acquire a player of Caitlin Clark or Angel Reese's caliber.

“I think the fans would rally around that effort to bring some of the A’ja Wilsons, Caitlin Clarks, the Angel Reeses, you know, Stewie out in New York and Sabrina, bring them out here to Houston in front of the Houston fan base."

Although both Clark and Reese are under contract for the next several seasons, the Toronto Tempo will play games in 2026. Another expansion team, like the Comets, could be introduced in 2027 or 2028, around the time free agency talks surrounding Reese and Clark could arise.

With the emergence of Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese as WNBA stars, the league is beginning to grow at an unprecedented rate. Between viewership, attendance and merchandise sales, numbers are up across the board for the league.

Given this, the WNBA seems poised to expand beyond the Valkyries and the Tempo over the next two years. In a statement to The Houston Chronicle, Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta said it's time to bring the WNBA back to Houston.

“The Houston Comets helped put the WNBA on the map and the City of Houston deserves the chance to once again show how great of a place it is for women’s basketball.
"We still proudly display the Comets championship banners and retired jerseys at Toyota Center. It’s been far too long; it’s time to bring the WNBA back to Houston.”

As Fertitta referenced, the Comets banners still hang in the Toyota Center. The team remains the only one in WNBA history to four-peat as champions, winning titles in 1997, '98, '99, and '00 under Cooper and Sheryl Swoopes.

In 2008, the team was put up for sale by then-owner Hilton Koch. However, the WNBA eventually took over the franchise and disbanded it.

Now, all these years later, Cynthia Cooper believes that if Tilman Fertitta can revive the franchise, fans will get behind a movement to acquire a star of Caitlin Clark's caliber.
