A'ja Wilson has been named the WNBA MVP for the 2024 season. The Las Vegas Aces superstar had a dominant season that saw her beat worthy challengers Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier for the award. The recognition is the third in Wilson’s career after winning in 2020 and 2022.
Wilson became the second player in league history to be voted MVP unanimously. She followed in the footsteps of Cynthia Cooper-Dyke who accomplished the feat in 1997. The reigning WNBA Finals MVP leads the Aces’ bid to win the championship for the third straight year.
A'ja Wilson’s latest accolade is one for the record books. She is the first player to win the MVP three times in the first seven years of her career, per ESPN. Wilson has arguably been the most dominant player since she entered the WNBA in 2018 and promptly won the Rookie of the Year award.
Wilson has clearly been the best player this season despite impressive performances by Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier. The Aces’ six-time All-Star scored a record 1,021 points this year, the most in league history. She is in a league of her own as no one else has breached the 1,000-point mark. Wilson comfortably surpassed Jewell Loyd’s previous mark of 939 points tallied in 2023.
Overall, A'ja Wilson racked up the most points, hauled down the most rebounds and blocked the most shots this season. No player has ever led the league in all three categories in a single season until Wilson. She had such a historic run that NFL legend Shannon Sharpe urged the WNBA to name her the MVP before the regular season ended.
A'ja Wilson joins a legendary list of WNBA players who won the MVP award three times
Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie and Lauren Jackson were on the totem pole of MVP winners in WNBA history with three each. Swoopes won hers in 2000, 2002 and 2005. Leslie earned hers in 2001, 2004 and 2006. Jackson received the recognition in 2003, 2007 and 2010.
A'ja Wilson joined the list after a staggering 2024 season that saw her reset several records. She will add this year’s trophy to the ones she got in 2020 and 2022.
A'ja Wilson looks to complete a historic season with another championship
The Las Vegas Aces were the heavy favorites to win their third straight championship. Despite Wilson’s electric MVP season, the Aces had their ups and downs before sprinting to the end of the regular season. The Becky Hammon-coached team finished with a 9-1 record down the stretch to earn the No. 4 seed in the playoffs.
While Wilson’s accomplishments have been celebrated by her teammates and Aces fans, she has remained even-keeled. She has been appreciative of the support but has maintained that winning the championship is all that matters to her.
With the MVP award going to her trophy case soon, she can now focus on completing a historic 2024 campaign by leading Las Vegas to a grand slam.
