A'ja Wilson didn't mince words when she called out her teammates for wanting to take pictures with Usher postgame on Tuesday (July 16). The Las Vegas suffered a 93-85 loss to the Chicago Sky at home and in attendance was the 8x Grammy winner with whom the Aces unit wanted to grab a photo.
While she did dap up with Usher later on, the 2x WNBA MVP was in no mood to relent as she saw the team's four-win streak snapped by the Sky. A'ja Wilson was captured on video taking a shot at her teammates, saying:
"They ain't did sh*t all day, but they wanna take a motherf***ing picture with Usher”
Wilson ended her evening with another dominant double-double. The forward propped up 28 points and 14 rebounds in 37 minutes of action. However, it was an off day for Kelsey Plum and Chelsea Gray as the backcourt could only manage 15 points between them. The rest of the bench, sans the injured Kate Martin, added 25 points, with 19 of them coming from Tiffany Hayes.
As for A'ja Wilson, the loss doesn't necessarily dent her MVPesque run as she continues to notch up big numbers this season 2024 WNBA season. As for her slight at her teammates, it's understandable as the Las Vegas Aces now have their eighth loss of the season.
A'ja Wilson talks gunning for a third MVP title
A'ja Wilson has two MVP awards to her name already, and given the ongoing superhuman season, the forward could well be on her way to winning a third piece of silverware. In a riveting statement on 'First Take' last week, she admitted the reason behind her motivated run this season. And, it wasn't because of Breanna Stewart winning the MVP title last season.
"I don’t think Stewie getting MVP was really the motivation for me. Obviously, between her ... they all deserved it, so I get it 100%. I think the most motivation for me, and everyone probably knows the story, is the fourth-place vote. That was all the motivation that I needed," Wilson said. "In my eyes, maybe the top two, I get it. But to see I got a fourth-place vote, was kinda like ‘ok, obviously I have more work that needs to be done.’"
And since then, Wilson has been on a tear this season, averaging 27.2 points, 11.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.8 steals, and 2.8 blocks per game. Her two-way play has been elite at best as the Aces gear up to defend their title for the third time. Only time will tell if A'ja Wilson can bag the honors this time around.
