A'ja Wilson isn’t just admired by her WNBA peers for her incredible skills on the court; her humor and off-court antics make her just as beloved. She showed off that playful side when she wished two-time WNBA All-Star Allisha Gray a happy birthday.
Wilson and Gray, who turned 30 on Sunday, have a well-documented friendship, and Wilson added another memorable moment by sharing a photo of the two. The camera flash in the image made Gray’s jacket appear to glow. Wilson captioned the post:
“Hope your day is as bright as your damn jacket 😂 happy birthday Ermzzzz.”
Gray responded with humor, reposting it and adding her own caption:
“Chill 😂😂😂… Thank you!!!”
Wilson and Gray were teammates under coach Dawn Staley during South Carolina’s 2016-17 women’s basketball season. That year, the Gamecocks secured Staley’s first national championship by defeating Mississippi State 67-55.
In the title game, both players were instrumental, with Wilson scoring 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, while Gray added 18 points and 10 boards.
A'ja Wilson and Allisha Gray’s friendship shines during 2024 WNBA All-Star Weekend
A'ja Wilson and Allisha Gray’s close bond was on full display at the 2024 WNBA All-Star Weekend. Gray stole the spotlight by winning both the skills challenge and the 3-point contest, with Wilson enthusiastically cheering her on throughout.
When Gray won the events, Wilson was there in full support — even sporting a pair of goggles as a nod to Gray’s signature look.
After Gray secured the 3-point contest victory, Wilson tweeted:
“I’m so happy for Lish man OMG! I’m not paying for another dinner my friend a shootah.”
During the All-Star Game itself, Gray was driving to the basket for an easy layup when Wilson dropped into the paint, attempting to contest the shot. The collision sent Gray to the ground, leading to a foul.
Wilson jokingly signaled to the referee that her former college teammate had flopped, playfully mocking Gray after the midair clash.
The two share more than just on-court chemistry — they were best friends and roommates in college, and their bond has only grown stronger during their WNBA careers.
