The New York Liberty squandered a prime chance to take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-five WNBA Finals series against the Minnesota Lynx, suffering a late meltdown and losing 95-93 in overtime. Fans were in utter disbelief over the turn of events and shared their thoughts on social media.

With an 18-3 run to finish the fourth quarter, which included a huge 4-point play from guard Courtney Williams with five seconds remaining, the Lynx were able to overcome an 81-66 deficit with five minutes to go and sent the game into overtime. In the extra period, Minnesota remained relentless and continued to press against New York, ultimately pulling off the huge come-from-behind win, much to the astonishment of the Brooklyn crowd.

Fans let their sentiments known on X (formerly Twitter) on the stunning Liberty loss. A fan bluntly described it as a choke job, writing:

"That's an all-time finals choke job by the New York Liberty, men's or women's hoops. F**k."

Another fan was left stunned, saying:

"Unreal."
"Holy s**t! That was nuts," one user said.
"This was an implosion not a choke," another one added.

Some comments, meanwhile, related the defeat to the recent struggles of New York sports overall.

"Choke job, on par with the rest of New York sports," a user said.

Some fans focused on the Lynx's performance, with one saying:

"A devastating loss for the NY Liberty. Lynx were relentless down the stretch and kept fighting. Napheesa Collier with an incredible turn-around game-winner down the strecth. Crazy finish."
"LYNX NEVER DIE BABY," another one wrote.

The Liberty will try to bounce back in Game 2, set for Sunday in New York.

Minnesota Lynx tie largest comeback in WNBA Finals history in win over New York Liberty

The impressive come-from-behind 95-93 OT victory of the Minnesota Lynx over the New York Liberty in Game 1 on Thursday tied the largest comeback in WNBA Finals history.

Minnesota fought its way back from as much as 18 points down in the first half to force overtime and claim the huge win. It tied what the New York Liberty did in their 68-67 victory against the Houston Comets in Game 2 of the 1999 WNBA Finals.

The Lynx were down by 15 points, 81-66, with five minutes left in regulation on Thursday before they began their spirited fightback, taking the lead 84-83 after a 4-point play by Courtney Williams with five seconds to go.

Breanna Stewart had the opportunity to win it for New York in regulation, but she split her free throws, sending the game into OT, where the Lynx held tough for the win.

Williams, Kayla McBride and Napheesa Collier scored 23, 22 and 21 points, respectively, to lead Minnesota to the win. Jonquel Jones had 24 for the New York Liberty.
