After Caitlin Clark achieves rookie record, Angel Reese goes toe to toe with another incredible double-double feat

Angel Reese wasn't far behind after rival rookie Caitlin Clark trounced the Seattle Storm with a WNBA record-breaking assists in a single season. The Chicago Sky forward later notched up a record of her own with the fastest 20 double-double games in a single edition.

Reese's 19-point, 20-rebound outing came in Sky's blowout 86-68 loss to the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday (Aug. 18) at the Footprint Arena.

Earlier, Clark who leads the WNBA in dimes at 8.3 per game, had nine on Sunday to reach 232, surpassing Ticha Penicheiro's previous rookie record of 224 set back in '98.

As for Reese, the No. 7 pick of the 2024 draft class surpassed Connecticut Sun forward Alyssa Thomas and Sylvia Fowles' record of reaching 20 DD2s in 29 games. Reese did it in 27.

The 22-year-old former LSU star leads the Sky in rebounding. At the time of writing, she is averaging 12.3 rebounds per contest. Her ability to crash the boards has been one of the standout aspects of her game in her maiden WNBA run. Both Angel Reese and Clark are in a toe-to-toe race to win ROTY honors this season.

Angel Reese focused on the outcome over personal performances

Earlier, Angel Reese was asked about her double-double game against the Phoenix Mercury upon her return as the WNBA resumed. The forward had 11 points and 15 rebounds in the 20-point 85-65 loss, and when asked about her unique milestone, she said the feat didn't matter.

She made it clear that the accolades were not a priority and didn't want to hear about them.

“I don’t want to hear about no record, man.”

The rookie had set the franchise record for the most offensive rebounds but was more focused on the final result. Chicago has lost two of its last three games and is now two wins behind Clark and the Fever.

The Sky are eighth overall with an 11-16 record and will look to bump up the wins as the regular season inches to a close. They are 4-9 at home and have a relatively better 7-7 record in away games.

Angel Reese and the Sky have one more stop in their road trip as they take on playoff contenders Connecticut Sun, following which they host the Las Vegas Aces at home. Only time will tell if the young rookie gets to make the postseason in her maiden year.
