Aliyah Boston reacted to WNBA player Haley Jones signing with the Geelong Supercats in Australia. Jones is among the many players moving overseas during the offseason to remain active and earn more money. She is still under contract with the Atlanta Dream until the 2026 season.
In an Instagram post, Jones shared her first photos as a member of the Supercats in the WNBL. It's her first season overseas since getting drafted sixth overall by the Dream in 2023, the same class as Boston. She played college basketball for the Stanford Cardinal from 2019 to 2023.
"First season down under💙," Jones wrote.
Aliyah Boston was one of several WNBA players who reacted to Haley Jones' move to Australia for the offseason. Boston shared Jones' post on her Instagram Stories, dropping a three-word message for her fellow player.
"Glowing in Australia," Boston wrote.
According to Yahoo! Sports, Aliyah Boston and Haley Jones have been great friends since 2017. They were part of Team USA for the FIBA Under-16 World Cup, with Boston among the stars of the team, while Jones served as an alternate. They formed a great relationship there along with Fran Belibi.
Boston went to South Carolina, with Jones and Belibi teaming up at Stanford. The separation didn't change their relationship, and when Stanford beat South Carolina in the 2021 Final Four, the duo consoled their friend after the game.
"We have so much love for each other," Jones said. "And so much respect. … She had a great game, we matched each other's energy tonight. And so after the game, it was just respect and love for her. You never want to see your friend hurting."
Boston was drafted No. 1 by the Indiana Fever two years later in 2023, while Jones went sixth. Belibi, meanwhile, decided to pursue a master's degree in education.
Aliyah Boston's Fever teammates playing overseas
In addition to Haley Jones, Aliyah Boston knows several more players taking their talents abroad this offseason. Boston has not signed with any overseas team and has not been linked to the Unrivaled Basketball League.
However, several of her Indiana Fever teammates are already taking Turkey by storm. Temi Fagbenle, Grace Berger, Damiris Dantas and Erica Wheeler are all in Turkey, playing for Besiktas, OGM Ormanspor, Botaş SK and Nesibe Aydin, respectively.
Kelsey Mitchell, who will be a free agent, is likely to return to the Athletics United league in the offseason just like in the past three years. NaLyssa Smith reportedly signed a contract with Zhejiang Golden Bulls in China, while Caitlin Clark is not expected to play basketball.
