Aliyah Boston and Vinyl BC looked to win their third straight Unrivaled game on Friday when they faced Laces BC. Boston and Co. took on an opponent who won their previous two games by an average of 29.0 points.
The Indiana Fever star continued to come off the bench for coach Teresa Weatherspoon. She contributed a rebound as her team trailed 24-22 after the opening seven minutes.
Boston started in the second quarter but saw a few minutes of action. Laces looked like they would turn the game into a rout before Vinyl finished the half strong. Boston and her teammates faced a 45-40 halftime deficit.
Aliyah Boston again came off the bench to start the second half. She came in late and contributed four points and a rebound. Vinyl tried to cut the deficit, but Laces BC extended its lead to 71-63.
Teresa Weatherspoon kept the two-time WNBA All-Star on the bench the entire fourth quarter. Vinyl and Laces battled throughout before Alyssa Thomas' team emerged with a hardly-fought 83-79 win.
Vinyl BC coach Teresa Weatherspoon has preferred Dearica Hamby over Aliyah Boston
Leading into the debut of Unrivaled, WNBA insiders thought Teresa Weatherspoon would give Vinyl BC a solid dose of Aliyah Boston plays. The Indiana Fever center's inside game would complement the outside shooting of Rhyne Howard and Arike Ogunbowale.
Instead, Weatherspoon has preferred the more mobile Dearica Hamby, who had shown steady shooting with the LA Sparks in 2024. Last season, Hamby shot 34.1% from deep, giving T-Spoon another outside threat.
The trio of Hamby, Ogunbowale, and Howard quickly made Vinyl BC one of the best teams on offense in Unrivaled. Heading into the matchup against Laces BC, they averaged 84.0 points per game.
Weatherspoon's strategy has relegated Boston to a primary backup role. She is averaging 9.0 minutes per game before logging 12 against the Laces. In the loss to the Laces, she took three shots compared to 16 from Dearica Hamby. Weatherspoon runs more plays for the LA Sparks forward than for the Indiana Fever star.
