Angel Reese and Rose BC beat Mist BC 71-66 on Sunday for their first win in the Unrivaled league. The Chicago Sky All-Star contributed four points, six rebounds, one steal and one block in eight minutes. Rose moved to fourth in a six-team tournament following the victory.
A play involving Reese halfway through the first quarter went viral. The Chi Barbie stole the ball from a streaking Breanna Stewart before racing to the other end of the court. Instead of going for an uncontested layup, she passed it back to Kahleah Copper, who had to score over the outstretched arms of Stewie.
Fans promptly reacted to the sequence:
“Angel Bricks”
@HoopsHater said:
“She more worried about her OF career than basketball”
@BizarroBabyface added:
“Somewhere Ben Simmons is smiling.”
One reacted:
“Imagine being so bad at layups as a big you’d rather bypass an open layup and throw a pass behind you to someone that’s covered”
Another commented:
“She didn't want to blow the lay-up in front of dozens of attendees.”
Angel Reese had a clear lane in front of her but might have been intimidated by Breanna Stewart, who desperately chased after her. Even Kahleah Copper, who scored with a short jumper, said something to Reese as they jogged back to play defense.
The former LSU star went 136-for-321 last season in layups for the Chicago Sky, the worst in the WNBA. Reese shot 39.1% overall, which was criticized by many as unacceptable for a 6-foot-4 player who spends most of her time inside the paint. The viral play against the Mist will only add ammunition to Reese's detractors.
Angel Reese committed a turnover against Mist BC that has also gone viral
Before passing on an uncontested layup, Angel Reese committed an error that quickly became viral. The play happened with a little under five minutes left in the first quarter. After Jewell Loyd had missed a jumper, Reese grabbed the rebound and brought the ball to Rose’s court.
Breanna Stewart met Reese near the top of the 3-point line as the Chi Barbie faked an attempt. The Sky star committed an error as she put the ball again to drive to the basket. Reese’s error was the first of three turnovers.
Most fans trolled Angel Reese on social media for that play. It didn’t help that a few minutes later, she passed on an open layup.
