Angel Reese has been making all the right moves since being selected seventh by the Chicago Sky in the 2024 WNBA draft. However, amid all the greatness, the former LSU standout became the owner of an unwanted record: the most number of rejected shots in a single season.
Reese has been rejected 54 times already in 24 games. With 16 games still to go in the regular season, that number could go even higher. At the current rate of 2.25 rejections per game, that number could be 90 by the time the season ends.
Before Angel Reese became the owner of the unwanted record, it belonged to Natalie Williams, who had 53 shots rejected in 34 games.
However, on the day that Reese reached the mark, the Sky defeated the Las Vegas Aces 93-85 on the road. Kennedy Carter led all scorers with 34 points, while Angel Reese had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. A’ja Wilson had 28 points and 14 rebounds for Las Vegas.
The Sky are now 10-14 on the season and are fourth in the East and eighth overall. A good finish to the season should help them rise in the standings and position themselves for the WNBA playoffs. They are separated from the Caitlin Clark-led Indiana Fever by just 0.5 games.
How has Angel Reese fared for Chicago Sky so far?
The 2024 WNBA draft class was probably the most hyped in the history of the league. This was mostly because of Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, and their storied NCAA rivalry. The hype has transitioned into record viewership and attendance.
Reese had been prolific for the Chicago Sky, averaging 13.5 points, 11.9 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 24 games. She has 17 double-doubles and had 15 straight at one point, the longest in WNBA history. That streak came to an end against the New York Liberty on Friday. In the 17 games where Reese had a double-double, Chicago went 6-9.
The Chicago Sky won 18 games in 2023 with a 45.0% win percentage. After 24 games in 2024, the win percentage has dropped to 41.7%. Thus, there has been criticism that Reese’s performances have not transitioned into wins for her team.
With 16 games still left to go, Angel Reese and Chicago could go on a run and change that narrative.
