Angel Reese confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) in mid-July that she would be participating in Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier’s Unrivaled league, which is scheduled for January 2025. The forward had only just started her pro career when she decided to join the tournament in Miami. Reese and other WNBA stars such as Chelsea Gray, Kelsey Plum, Kahleah Copper and others committed to playing.
On Wednesday, news broke that Unrivaled and TNT Sports had reached a multi-year media rights agreement. The “Chi Barbie” went on Instagram to react to the development:
“Exactly! WOMEN IN CHARGE!!”
Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, who are dueling in the 2024 WNBA Finals, had been planning for the Unrivaled league for years. They eventually put things together and announced it would tip off in January.
The league offers players with an average salary of $250K, which is close to the maximum salary in the WNBA, prompting players, including Angel Reese, to quickly confirm their participation.
On Tuesday, the announcement of the new TV deal added excitement to fans of 3x3 and 1x1 basketball. Warner Bros. Discovery released a statement regarding TNT's coverage of the tournament:
"TNT Sports and professional women’s basketball league Unrivaled have reached a multi-year media rights partnership to exclusively present live game coverage on TNT and truTV – along with all games being streamed on Max – beginning with the league’s inaugural season."
"The agreement will feature more than 45 primetime regular season matchups three nights a week across TNT Sports platforms, with twice-weekly games on TNT as the lead network on Mondays and Fridays and additional broadcasts on truTV on Saturdays. Unrivaled live game action will tip off Jan. 17, 2025."
Angel Reese didn’t want to go overseas in the offseason
Most WNBA players spend the offseason going overseas, particularly in Europe to play basketball. Next year, 30 of the best players from the league will compete in 3x3 or 1x1 basketball games under Unrivaled. As the tournament will be held in Miami, Florida, the players don’t have to take their talents outside of the USA.
Angel Reese had this to say about why she didn’t hesitate to confirm her participation (via Julia Poe):
"Staying in Miami from January to March without heading overseas was a major draw. I never planned on going overseas. Knowing two great players like Breanna [Stewart] and Napheesa [Collier] are behind this, who wouldn't want to be part of it? I knew they'd bring in more top talent."
TNT’s deal with Unrivaled made Reese’s decision to play spot-on.
