Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky shared disappointing news for women's basketball fans on Saturday. The 22-year-old rookie sensation, a strong contender for the prestigious Rookie of the Year award, saw her season cut short due to a wrist injury.
The franchise announced that Reese was evaluated following Friday night's game against the LA Sparks, and the results were discouraging.
Since the news of Reese's injury broke, fans have wondered when they will see the former LSU superstar back on the basketball court.
Angel Reese's return timeline from injury
Angel Reese has been ruled out for the remainder of the WNBA season and will not return to action. Even if the Sky secures a playoff spot, the team will have to contend without their standout rookie.
Wrist injuries typically require a few weeks to heal. According to Healthline, a mild wrist sprain usually heals within one to two weeks. For moderate to severe injuries, recovery can take six to eight weeks, while more severe cases may require a healing period of eight to 12 weeks.
Although the Chicago Sky and Reese herself have not disclosed the severity of her wrist injury, her recovery will likely take at least a month. This assumption is based on the fact that she has been ruled out for the remainder of the season, including the playoffs.
"After undergoing further medical evaluation after the September 6 game against Los Angeles, Angel Reese has been ruled out for the rest of the 2024 season with a wrist injury, the team announced today. The team will provide medical updates later as needed," the Chicago Sky said in a tweet on X (formerly Twitter).
The former LSU superstar has committed to playing in the Unrivaled League, set to take place in January 2025 in Miami. Based on Reese's tweet on Saturday, there’s a strong likelihood that the Sky rookie will return to the court for the newly established 3x3 basketball league.
In her tweet, Reese hinted at her participation in the 'Unrivaled' league.
"You’ll still see me being the biggest cheerleader on the sideline! And Unrivaled league, see you soon!" Reese wrote on X.
Reese's fans would hope that the 22-year-old basketball sensation will overcome her injury setback and make a strong return as soon as possible.
