Angel Reese has become one of the most entertaining players in the 2024 WNBA season. The Chicago Sky rookie leads the entire league in rebounds per game (12.6) while becoming a serial double-double earner with the Eastern Conference team.
Reese was the subject of an unfortunate post on X by FanDuel, which shaded one part of her game while trying to praise her rebounding skills. The sportsbook shared a graphic highlighting that Reese has totaled 43 offensive rebounds in the last seven games, but has also missed 64 shots over the same span.
This post rubbed several people the wrong way, as it exposed one of Reese's game's biggest flaws. She hasn't been able to unlock her potential on the offensive side. Reese has missed open layups which have resulted in multiple rebounds during the season.
A couple of months ago, fans pointed out that she grabbed multiple rebounds off her missed layups, which bumped her stats.
Reese's rebounds have played a key factor in her double-doubles, sitting at 21 with 12 games left for the Chicago Sky. She could tie and break Tina Charles' record for the most double-doubles for a rookie after 14 years.
She already set a new record for the most consecutive double-doubles in a single season and Reese is clearly not done.
Angel Reese emulates Shaquille O'Neal's 31-year-old milestone
With her 20 rebounds against the Connecticut Sun, Angel Reese became the first rookie in the NBA or WNBA in 21 years to record back-to-back 20-rebound games. The last time fans witnessed this feat was in 1993, when a rookie Shaquille O'Neal grabbed 21 and 25 rebounds against the Boston Celtics and Washington Bullets, respectively.
The forward has made a strong impression during her first season in the league, making a solid case for the 2024 Rookie of the Year award.
Reese has already said that her focus is on doing the dirty work for her team, adding that her offense will flourish eventually. She could aspire to emulate double-double threats like A'ja Wilson and Napheesa Collier, two MVP candidates averaging 20+ points and 10+ assists per game.
Angel Reese has work to do to improve her level if she wants to become a more complete player. She's shooting 39.3% from the field while players like Wilson, Collier and Dearica Hamby shoot 52.3%, 49.7% and 50.4% from the field, respectively, this season.
The potential is there, and if she puts in the work, Reese can become a better leader for the Sky.
