Angel Reese stats tonight: A look at Chicago Sky forward's performance vs Phoenix Mercury

Angel Reese entered the WNBA record books as he notched up yet another double-double. The Chicago Sky rookie ended her evening with 19 points, and a mammoth 20 rebounds in the team's 86-68 loss. The DD2 marked the 20th of her WNBA career, further making her case for staying in the race for Rookie of the Year.

Reese ended her first half with six points, and 10 rebounds at halftime as the Chicago Sky trailed the Phoenix Mercury 52-35 at the Footprint Center on Sunday (Aug. 18). Both teams played earlier last week with the 2024 WNBA resuming from its midseason break. The Mercury walked away with a handsome 85-65 win at the Wintrust Arena.

At the half, Reese had not recorded any assists, steals, and blocks. She did have two turnovers. The second half saw the needle move as she had one steal and an assist. On the scoring front, the forward went 2-7 from the field, and 0-0 from the three-point range. By the end of the game, she shot 8-16 from the field, and none from beyond the arc.

Reese was one point short of a solid 20-20 game, as the Sky lost another contest to Phoenix since the WNBA restart.

Angel Reese and the Sky's playoff hopes get slimmer with another loss

Despite her efforts, Angel Reese and the Sky suffered their second loss in three games. The defeat to the Mercury now puts them at 11-16 as they are still in eighth spot in the overall WNBA standings. They are now one loss ahead of the Atlanta Dream, and two wins behind Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever.

On the game front, there wasn't a lot of help coming for Reese. Kamilla Cardoso had 12 points and four rebounds. Chennedy Carter popped up with 16 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Isabelle Harrison made a bit of a splash coming off the bench with 12 points.

Reese headed into the contest as the second-leading scorer (13.4) behind Carter for the Sky, and the team leader in rebounds (12.0). Her rookie campaign has been scintillating so far with 20 double-double games in the 27 games played. Another DD2 on Sunday and a win will help Chicago stay in the hunt for a playoff berth.

Up next, Angel Reese and Chicago continue their road trip, taking on the Connecticut Sun, followed by a home contest against the Las Vegas Aces.
