Angel Reese notched another double-double on Thursday night to extend her streak to 15, but just barely got it on time. The Chicago Sky also struggled mightily against Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty, which currently owns the best record in the WNBA at 19-4.
Reese finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, going 5-for-17 from the field. She didn't get her 10th rebound until around the two-minute mark. The game was already decided at that point since it was a total domination by the Liberty to get the 91-76 win.
Chennedy Carter had a game-high 22 points but it was not enough to make it competitive against New York. Marina Mabrey added 15 points, three rebounds and six assists while Kamilla Cardoso put up eight points and seven rebounds in 20 minutes.
Angel Reese is starting to pull away from Candace Parker's double-double record that she broke last week. The former LSU star has been having a historic rookie season due to her double-double streak, putting Indiana Fever's Caitlin Clark on notice in the race for the WNBA Rookie of the Year award.
Reese is averaging 13.8 points and 11.8 rebounds per game and currently leads the league in rebounds per game over MVP favorite A'ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces. The Chicago Sky star continues to make history as a rookie, but not everyone is impressed.
While most of her fans have a lot to celebrate heading into the All-Star and Olympic break, some fans online are still pointing out her shooting percentage as a forward. They are also looking at the box score and play-by-play data wherein she gets her own rebounds from her missed shots, with some dismissing her record as stat-padding.
Nevertheless, Angel Reese's name is in the record books and it's up for the next batch of rookies in the next decade or so to try and break it.
What's next for Angel Reese and Chicago Sky?
Angel Reese and Co. have two games left before the All-Star and Olympic break. However, it's not an easy final two games since they will face the New York Liberty once again on Saturday at home at Wintrust Arena.
After that, they will fly to Las Vegas and challenge the defending back-to-back WNBA champions Las Vegas Aces at Michelob ULTRA Arena on Tuesday. The Aces are on a roll recently after a rough start to the season. They have won eight of their last 10 games and are currently fourth in the WNBA standings with a 14-7 record.
In addition to the two regular season games, Reese will be teaming up with Caitlin Clark as part of Team WNBA in the 2024 All-Star Game. They will face Team USA at Footprint Arena in Phoenix on July 20.
