Women's basketball icon Sheryl Swoopes spoke out on behalf of Altadena residents following the devastating wildfires in LA. On Wednesday on Instagram, the four-time WNBA champion warned against developers looking to buy up real estate in the wake of so many losing their homes.
The Instagram story begins with: "ALTADENA IS NOT FOR SALE!!"
Her story continues: "DON'T SIGN ANYTHING!!!" and "PEOPLE ARE ALREADY BEING APPROACHED."
Swoopes urged those whose homes were destroyed in the LA wildfires not to sign anything they may be approached with. She said that certain real estate developers might be attempting to undervalue homeowners amid the grief and confusion. The issue can be compounded by the fact that Altadena is a racially diverse area and Black and minority communities could be at a higher risk from predatory developers.
The story asks that all use the hashtag, #EYESONALTADENA, on relevant posts so that they can be more easily found in the algorithm. Swoopes has used her platform to make multiple posts bringing attention to those most affected in the LA area.
Sheryl Swoopes tackles tough conversations
Three-time WNBA MVP Sheryl Swoopes isn't just outspoken about natural disasters like the LA wildfires. She uses her voice and platforms to speak about a wide range of topics.
Swoopes recently teamed up with sports reporter and broadcaster Terrika Foster-Brasby to bring audiences a new podcast, "Levels To This." The two speak with guests, primarily women, and discuss hard work, career and life adversity and what it takes to be at the top of one's craft.
In a portion of an episode, uploaded to Sheryl Swoopes' Instagram on Jan. 9, the two co-hosts talked about taking charge of one's life and identity, especially as women.
"If I choose not to get married until I'm 50 years old, damn it, that's my choice!" Swoopes said in the social media clip. "And who are you to tell me I have to be married by a certain age or else?"
