After the Atlanta Dream defeated the Chicago Sky 86-70 on Tuesday, the team's social media admin on X, formerly known as Twitter, trolled the Sky's Chennedy Carter. The Dream are currently the No. 8 in the WNBA standings with one more game to go.
In a now-deleted post on X, the Dream's official account shared a photo of the Sky's altered logo and was called the "Chicago Cry." Carter's image was also added and a crying emoji was used as a caption.
The Sky guard previously played for Atlanta after being drafted fourth overall in 2020. She had a tremendous rookie campaign for the Dream, where she finished second in Rookie of the Year voting, as well as a subpar second year before getting suspended due to "conduct detrimental to the team."
Chennedy Carter was subsequently traded to the LA Sparks before the start of the 2022 WNBA season. Carter primarily came off the bench in Los Angeles reportedly due to "poor conduct." She was released later in the season and remained a free agent the entire 2023 campaign.
The Chicago Sky signed her this offseason and has been a revelation for them. She's averaging 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.1 steals, while shooting 48.7% from the field. She's one of the candidates to win Most Improved Player of the Year.
On the other hand, the loss dropped the Sky to the No. 10 seed, although they have a slim chance of coming away with the final playoff spot on the final day of the regular season. They will face the Connecticut Sun and need the win to give themselves a chance at making the playoffs.
The Atlanta Dream are going up against the New York Liberty, while the Washington Mystics, who are the nine seed, have their hands full versus the Indiana Fever.
Fans react to Atlanta Dream's X account trolling Chennedy Carter
Some fans are appalled by what the Atlanta Dream did to Chennedy Carter on social media, especially after their owner ranted about the toxicity of Caitlin Clark's fans. It was not a good look for the Dream's social media team since Carter didn't even play on Tuesday's game due to a foot injury.
"Same Atlanta Dream who had a co-owner denounce toxicity in fandom today," a fan wrote.
"The Atlanta Dream don't have a single player on that team thats better than Chennedy Carter," one fan claimed.
"Chennedy Carter didn't even play but they singled her out. Neither did Angel, Cardoso, or DeShields and they bragging," another fan commented.
More fans shared their displeasure at the Dream admin's post.
"I think this post wouldn't have been so bad if it were just the logo? I dont see the need to target specific players at all," one fan said.
"The hypocrisy.... Just a bad look for the Dream," another fan said.
"First of all, they didn’t stand ten toes… second of all, we’ll remember this next season," said a fan.
Carter will be a restricted free agent this offseason and the Sky would certainly want her back. It won't be surprising to see if other teams show interest in her after the season she just had.
