The Atlanta Dream continued their West Coast trek to open the 2024 WNBA season with a matchup against the Phoenix Mercury. Atlanta, which held off the resilient LA Sparks 92-81, hoping to make it 2-0 before hosting the Dallas Wings for its home debut.
Tina Charles, who had an impressive game against the Sparks, could have a tougher time against the battle-tested Mercury.

Atlanta Dream vs Phoenix Mercury Game Summary
The Phoenix Mercury had a fast start to open the game against the Atlanta Dream. Behind new acquisition Kahleah Copper, who had 11 first-quarter points, the hosts raced to a 24-15 lead after the first 10 minutes. Phoenix's defense held Tina Charles scoreless.
Atlanta's Rhyne Howard had the hot hand in the second period, dropping 10 points to lead the Dream's response. Charles remained shackled but Allisha Gray and Cheyenne Parker-Tyus ably supported Howard. But the Mercury still carried a 43-37 edge as both teams exited for the halftime break.
Tina Charles finally got going in the third quarter for the Atlanta Dream. She had six points and got help from Crystal Dangerfield who added eight. The Dream played had their best period but couldn't pull away.
Kahleah Copper was the reason why the Phoenix Mercury kept in step. She had 16 more points, going 6-for-7, including 2-for-2 from deep. Copper pushed her team to a 65-60 lead with the fourth quarter still underway.
Copper continued her onslaught in the final frame with 10 more points but it was Sophie Cunningham who hit big shots. Cunningham played the entire period, nailing two key 3-pointers and having a handful of defensive stops.
Allisha Gray and Cheyenne Parker-Tyus combined for 22 points but it wasn't enough. Tina Charles couldn't score again while Rhyne Howard only had three points.
Phoenix eventually eked out a thrilling 88-85 win over Atlanta in the desert to level its season record to 1-1.

Rhyne Howard had an impressive 5-for-9 clip from deep while Allisha Gray wasn't too shabby with a 3-for-4 line.
Kahleah Copper had a career-high 38 points that were laced with three 3-pointers out of five attempts. Meanwhile, Diana Taurasi had a rough-shooting night, making just 1-for-8 tries from behind the arc.
