Breanna Stewart once quoted the actor/martial artist Bruce Lee in one of her X, formerly Twitter, posts in 2023. The New York Liberty star reposted Tim Newcomb's post about Leylah Fernandez on her handle.
She wrote the quotation in the caption of her post.
"Be like water 💧"
Newcomb, a tennis journalist, reported that the Canadian tennis player switched to non-tennis footwear during her 2023 US Open campaign.
"Fernandez has a Lululemon apparel deal & wore On's The Roger Pro shoe. In NYC she switched to the Puma Stewie 2 women's basketball shoe (water colorway) on her own w/ no Puma deal," Newcomb wrote in the caption of his post.
Stewart reposted the news to appreciate Fernansez's move and promote her signature sneaker line. However, the Liberty star only used the first few words of Bruce Lee's original quote.
Lee's full quote featured more characters and had a motivational value, teaching people to better themselves, focus on their task at hand, and adapt to their surroundings.
"Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water.
"If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend," Bruce Lee said in 1971 while starring in TV series Longstreet.
Breanna Stewart has somewhat followed Lee's wisdom as she was versatile and adaptive during the 2024 season. She averaged 20.4 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists to help her team win their first-ever WNBA title.
Breanna Stewart gives her final farewell to teammate leaving NY Liberty to join the Golden State Valkyries
Breanna Stewart gave a loving farewell to her teammate Kayla Thornton after she was drafted by the Golden State Valkyries in the WNBA expansion draft on Friday. The three-time WNBA champion uploaded the Liberty's farewell post for Thornton on her Instagram story and accompanied her thoughts in the caption of her upload.
"Love you @k_thornton💔"
Stewart also posted about Thornton's departure on her X handle, revealing that her daughter would also be very upset about learning the news.
Before the WNBA expansion draft, the teams were given a choice to secure six players from the draft and Liberty did not choose Kayla. Seeing the opportunity, the Valkyries picked up the 2024 WNBA champ.
