Sports journalist Jason Whitlock hit the WNBA over what he believes is the league's mishandling of its affairs despite the star power provided by rookie sensation Caitlin Clark. The host of Fearless with Jason Whitlock on Friday reacted to a New York Post report about the WNBA set to lose $40 million this year, with investors also growing frustrated over the continued losses.
He said the league could do a far better job in running its operations if it truly focuses on what is going to be beneficial to the WNBA in the long run.
He wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
"Worst-run league in the history of sports. They get the greatest gift in sports since Tiger Woods and they're blowing that (CC) trying to satisy a bunch of fragile, insecure, entitled feminists."
The WNBA has experienced considerable growth this season across various levels, including game attendance and TV viewership. It has been largely credited to the arrival of rookie Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever, who has infused a lot of interest not only from traditional WNBA fans but also new ones. However, it also ruffled the feathers of some in the league circle.
Despite absorbing losses yet again this season, hopes are high of a further upturn for the WNBA moving forward with money from new basketball media contracts and improved game attendance revenues kicking in.
LeBron James highlights what Caitlin Clark's arrival has meant to the WNBA
NBA superstar LeBron James is one of the basketball personalities who's high on Caitlin Clark's impact on the WNBA and how she is providing the long-sought attention that the league needs.
'The King' made his thoughts known on the matter on the Mind the Game podcast earlier this year, highlighting the WNBA has not seen a player like Clark for a long time, if at all, and it bodes well for the league.
"Don't get it twisted, don't get it f***ed up. Caitlin Clark is the reason why a lot of great things are going to happen for the WNBA."
He added:
"The one thing that I love that she is bringing to her sport: more people want to watch, more people want to tune in."
He went on to advise Cailin Clark to just continue what she is doing and improve her game, and not pay too much attention to those who are against her and her popularity.
Clark had a great first WNBA season, culminating with her winning Rookie of the Year. She averaged 19.2 points, 8.4 assists (league-high), 5.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 35 minutes while breaking league records along the way. More importantly, she thrust the Indiana Fever to renewed competitiveness as well as popularity the team has never seen before.
