2024 WNBA champion Breanna Stewart was the first guest on Candace Parker's show "The Trophy Room," which debuted on Thursday. The New York Liberty forward joined another legend of the game to talk about a variety of topics, including their transition from college to the pros and her decision to leave the Seattle Storm.
Talking about her first game, Stewart revealed it was against Parker's LA Sparks, and they even met at a Beyoncé concert a day before their duel.
"What I thought when I was drafted by Seattle was, 'This is gonna be great, this is amazing, we're going to turn things around,' and my first game was against you. A lot of my first things are with her," Stewart said (Timestamp: 30:24). "And I was like, 'This is amazing, I'm playing at Staples Center.'"
"I was at Beyonce [the night before], it was like, 'See you at the game.' We lose by 30, I was in the locker room like, 'What are we gonna do now? How can we fix this?' And I remember my teammates were like, 'So where are we going to dinner?' But that's how quick the season goes and the games go. It's literally onto the next. That was my "welcome to the WNBA" moment, it was playing against you," Stewart added.
That game happened on May 15, 2016, at the then-Staples Center, with the Sparks taking an easy 96-66 win over the Storm. Stewart played over 33 minutes and converted 9-of-13 shots for 23 points. She also added six rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block.
On the other end, Parker went 12-of-20 (3-of-6 3-pointers) from the field to finish the game with 34 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. LA was the WNBA champions that season, so there wasn't much Stewart and the Liberty could have done to stop them.
Breanna Stewart was sad after Candace Parker announced her retirement
The two stars have developed a good relationship over the years, as Breanna Stewart even shared her sadness when Candace Parker announced her retirement after winning the 2023 championship with the Las Vegas Aces.
In 16 head-to-head duels, Breanna Stewart beat Parker 9-7. The Liberty star won her third WNBA championship this past season, tying Parker in that category. She'll try to continue dominating the league, but it won't be easy as plenty of teams will try to improve the roster this offseason.
