Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier made a life-changing decision a few years ago. The idea of the Unrivaled League changed their lives and those of several other female basketball players in the country.
Stewart and Collier founded Unrivaled and successfully recruited some of the best players in the league in the inaugural season. However, that was not even difficult for the Minnesota Lynx star.
However, the idea originated between Collier and her husband, Alex Bazzell. Breanna Stewart was the first person to learn about it, and it was through Bazzell.
The New York Liberty forward informed Boardroom TV that two years ago, Bazzell proposed that Collier and Stewart become co-founders of the league, which the former (Stewart) considered an excellent idea at the time.
“I was like, this is amazing because I’ve played overseas a lot. I’ve been in China, Russia and Turkey, and now a way to really be home and be appreciated," Stewart said. (1:35 onwards) "The timing is also very perfect for where we are in women’s sports. But to have this done, ready to go in two years, what an incredibly quick timeline. But also, I’m really excited to be here.”
Moreover, once Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier decided on Unrivaled, they made a list of potential investors who saw their vision. The investment continued in their vision and there is a greater hope that it will continue when the league expands.
Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier spills beans on their plans for the Unrivaled
Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier have big plans for Unrivaled's future. They aim to make a profit this year. In a conversation with Boardroom, the co-founders disclosed their plans.
"We’re hoping to make profit in year one. Hopefully that can grow and elevate."
Unrivaled is currently based in Miami. However, Collier said they plan to expand the league to other cities and eventually throughout the country. Collier even admitted that she had plans for the league but couldn't discuss them openly.
"Expansion, we are looking at that Moving to cities and more teams, more people. ...We have big plans, I am not sure even how much I am allowed to say."
Breanna Stewart also added that the plan remains to help American players stay within the country and not have to go overseas to earn money.
"Hopefully there are no players who have to go overseas, when they come out of college. You can over by choice, but we have an amazing alternative," she said.
In its inaugural season, Unrivaled received a $35 million investment from NBA players like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Olympic legend Michael Phelps and several other prominent female sports personalities.
