The Las Vegas Aces ran into a highly determined New York Liberty squad led by Breanna Stewart in this year's WNBA semifinals. The Liberty entered the series looking for revenge after the Aces beat them in the Finals last year while Las Vegas was determined to reach the Finals and win the title for the third straight year.
With these teams being extremely motivated for different reasons, players from both sides have played physical basketball. However, there have been some questionable foul calls coming from the officials. One such call was pointed out by Marta Xargay, a former Phoenix Mercury player and Stewart's wife.
Xargay expressed her frustrations at the foul calls on X, formerly Twitter, by retweeting a clip of a foul called against the Liberty. Xargay did not have words and instead used the 'double exclamation point' emoji three times.
In the first game, there were a total of 31 personal fouls called, 15 on the Aces and 16 on the Liberty. There was a slightly higher volume of fouls in the second game, with a total of 41; 22 were called on the Aces and 19 on the Liberty.
Then in Game 3, there was a lower number of calls; 13 were called on the Aces while the Liberty were assessed with 10. In the fourth and final game, the Aces combined for 15 while the Liberty were given 20.
In total, 65 personal fouls were called on both teams equally.
Breanna Stewart and Marta Xargay share a sweet moment after the Liberty eliminate the Aces
The Las Vegas Aces have been at the top of the WNBA for the past two years after winning the title in 2022 and 2023. However, the Aces were eliminated by Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty.
Beating the defending champions is already a great achievement. It's made even sweeter by how the Liberty have gotten their revenge after the Aces beat them in the Finals last year.
Marta Xargay celebrated this victorious moment with her wife by embracing her and kissing her after the game concluded. The WNBA's official X account captured the moment.
Breanna Stewart was one of the Liberty's leaders in taking down the champs. She scored 34 points in the first game of the series and then dropped 15 points, seven rebounds and eight assists in the second. Her team won in both instances.
In Game 3, Stewie scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds but it was not enough to complete the sweep of the Aces, as the Liberty lost by 14 (95-81).
In Game 4, Breanna Stewart looked determined to put the Aces away for good. She had a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds while also rejecting four shots. Her performance helped propel the Liberty as they are once again in the WNBA Finals.
