Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty moved one step closer to the Finals after defeating their playoff rivals from last year, the Las Vegas Aces, 88-84 in Game 2 of the semi-finals on Tuesday.
Stewart couldn’t match her explosive performance from Game 1 of the semifinals, where she put up 34 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals on 12-for-19 shooting.
This time, she was held to 15 points on 5-for-15 shooting. However, she sealed the game with clutch free throws in the final five seconds and showcased her playmaking skills with eight assists, tying her playoff career-high.
Her stats are listed below:
Even with Breanna Stewart's scoring limited, the Liberty secured the win thanks to Sabrina Ionescu's strong fourth quarter, finishing with 24 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Jonquel Jones and Courtney Vandersloot also contributed with double-digit scoring, adding 14 and 12 points, respectively.
For the Aces, MVP A’ja Wilson led the way with 24 points and seven rebounds, while Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray chipped in with 17 and 14 points, respectively.
Alysha Clark and Tiffany Hayes also scored in double figures with 13 and 10 points.
The Liberty are now just one win away from advancing to the Finals for the second consecutive year.
Breanna Stewart says she’s grown since 2023 playoffs
Breanna Stewart recorded her playoff career-worst scoring average in the 2023 post, tallying just 18.4 points per game on 35.8% shooting, the second-lowest of her playoff career. Her 3-point shooting dropped to a playoff career-low 19.6%.
This followed an MVP-winning regular season where she averaged 23.0 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game, shooting 46.5% from the field and 35.5% from beyond the arc.
However, 2024 marked a new chapter for Stewart, and after leading the Liberty to a league-best 32-8 regular season record, she said she’s grown from the disappointment of last year (via ABCNews.com):
“I think I’ve just kind of grown from it,” Stewart said.
"I've had – unfortunately – a lot of time to reflect on it, and where can I be better. And how to handle things collectively better. But with that, I don't forget who I am and what I can do," she added.
Stewart also acknowledged the disappointment of her last playoff run but vowed to come back stronger:
"Last time wasn't my most proudest, but I'm going to continue to be better,” she said.
In the first three games of the 2024 playoffs, she has averaged 22.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.3 blocks per game.
