New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart has been one of the most dominant players in the WNBA for several years. Since winning her first WNBA All-Star selection in 2017, Stewart has won two titles, two Finals MVP awards and two WNBA MVP awards. However, this season, ESPN ranked Stewart as the second-best player after the WNBA Olympic break.
While Breanna Stewart was ranked behind only A'ja Wilson, the reigning WNBA Finals MVP and reigning two-time WNBA champion, Stewart's wife, Marta Xargay was quick to question the justification behind ESPN ranking Stewart as the second-best player in the league.
As ESPN writer Kevin Pelton wrote that despite Stewart and the Liberty having the best record in the WNBA right now, she hasn't been playing up to her previous level.
With the lowest usage rate of her career, Pelton theorized that Stewart's lack of usage and 3-point shooting slump could be the first sign of the Liberty star aging as she approaches 30.
Stewart's wife, Marta Xargay, wasn't happy with the comments about the reigning MVP's age. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, she took aim at the outlet:
"STOP WITH THE DISRESPECT!!!! Aging out? She’s the reigning MVP on best team in the league! Do your homework Kevin Pelton!"
Breanna Stewart keeps the wins coming with dominant win over LA Sparks
After Breanna Stewart and Team USA captured gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics, defeating France on Sunday in a closely contested gold medal game, the WNBA season resumed on Thursday.
After a meeting between the Phoenix Mercury and Chicago Sky, and the DC Mystics and the Minnesota Lynx, Stewart and the New York Liberty tipped off against the LA Sparks.
While the game was the first for the team since Jul. 16, Stewart and the Liberty wasted no time getting going, picking up right where they had left off before the Olympic break.
On Thursday, they picked up a dominant 103-68 win over the LA Sparks on the road to extend their win streak to five. Breanna Stewart led the way for the Liberty, logging 27 points, four rebounds and two assists, while Sabrina Ionescu logged 18 points for the team.
While reflecting on the her time with Team USA, Stewart explained to media members:
"It’s not easy to completely stop your season, everyone’s coming from different (WNBA) teams, but our USA team, we were able to really kind of come together, and it was a great group, and we had a lot of fun.”
Following their fifth straight win, the team will be back in action on Saturday when they face off with the Las Vegas Aces in a pivotal matchup that will pit two of the best teams in the W against one another.
