Caitlin Clark and A'ja Wilson fans have started a heated debate on social media to defend their respective favorite player. Both the Indiana Fever rookie and the Las Vegas Aces superstar were nominated for the 2024 ESPYS as Best Athlete in women's sports.
Considering the years of difference between their professional careers, some fans didn't take kindly to the fact that Clark shared a nomination with Wilson, one of the best players in the world for the past few years.
Some didn't hesitate to call out the nomination, noting that Clark was a college player until a couple of months ago and Wilson has been competing against the best players in the world for longer.
"Caitlin Clark for vest athlete? Huh? Are you guys serious? This lady hasn't won anything. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. And you guys put her on the same stand with Aja Wilson? You put her together with the best WNBA player? Wow," one fan wrote.
"I'm still trying to understand are they talking about in ALL women's sports? Because um, yeah CC being part of this conversation is weird if we discussing WBB, but outrageous if it is ALL women's sports. Reducing athletic ability awards to popularity is wild," another fan said.
"This should be A’ja Wilson award," somebody declared.
Clark also had fans defending her, explaining what she did to get the nomination. Someone explained that her impact could be taken into account to define the winner of this prize, and another commenter drew the line to separate Caitlin's amateur achievements from her young professional career.
"CC is the all time leading scorer in NCAA history. Maybe the biggest record you can get.. one of the biggest accomplishments EVER. I hope this helps," somebody said.
Caitlin Clark compared to Maya Moore by former coach
Besides competing with A'ja Wilson for this notable award, Caitlin Clark has been compared to a WNBA legend, too, thanks to her kindness and interactions with fans. Her former coach in Iowa, Lisa Bluder, likened Clark to Maya Moore for influencing the younger generation.
"She's (Caitlin Clark) definitely making a difference in kids' lives. For her, Maya Moore was a huge role model growing up. So now she's the Maya Moore of this generation.
"And she understands that. She understands how important that was to her. To get that autograph after the game. To get that hug, to take that picture with," Bluder said.
Clark is playing her first season in the WNBA, and her impact has been remarkable. Some people disagree with her nomination for the ESPYS, but there's no denying that she's been a tremendous addition to the WNBA.
