Caitlin Clark has won the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year award. The Indiana Fever star became the 15th No. 1 pick to win the honors. She averaged 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 8.4 assists (second), shooting on 42/34/91 splits. Clark set the single-season record for total assists with 329 dimes.
Insider Shams Charania announced the news first on his X account on Friday.
She marked her debut season by leading the Fever back to the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Clark also played a pivotal role in ticket sales and merchandising, elevating the WNBA's global popularity by a significant margin, making her debut season a special one by all means on and off the court.
After facing stiff competition from rival Angel Reese for the award, Clark created significant separation post the All-Star and Olympic break.
In that stretch, the Fever went 11-15 before the break and 9-5 after, finishing the year 20-20 and sealing their trip to the playoffs as the sixth seed. Meanwhile, the Chicago Sky were from 10-14 and dropped to 3-14, finishing the year 13-27 and not making the playoffs.
Reese finished the year playing 34 games after a wrist injury cut her season short. She averaged 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds and 1.3 steals, shooting 39.1%, including 18.8% from 3.
Caitlin Clark finished fourth in WNBA MVP voting before being named Rookie of the Year
Caitlin Clark's phenomenal rookie season didn't just see her win the WNBA's ROY honors and earn her a spot in the MVP voting ballot. Clark finished fourth in that race behind eventual unanimous winner A'ja Wilson, runner-up Napheesa Collier and last year's MVP Breanna Stewart.
Clark received 130 voting points, with six third-place, 26 fourth-place and 22 fifth-place votes. It's clear that she's in contention for a better finish in the MVP voting in future seasons if she sustains her game and steadily adds to it.
Clark showed tremendous adaptability after a shaky start to her WNBA career but hit her strides once her teammates got accustomed to her pace, and she was fully developed as the engine for the Fever's offense.
Caitlin Clark made her name as one of the best passers in the league already while showing steady improvement in her scoring. Her growth in year two will be intriguing to see, considering she will come into the league with more rest and a better feel for the game at the highest level.
