After spending last season playing alongside Caitlin Clark, Lexie Hull is now gearing up to play in the first-ever season of Unrivaled. Following some recent comments on media day, the Indiana Fever forward has caught some backlash from fans.
Hull was placed on "Rose Basketball Club," where she'll get to play alongside numerous talented players. Among those is a multi-time All-Star and champion, Chelsea Gray.
During her first media availability for Unrivaled, Hull was asked about playing with a passer like Gray. After applauding her new teammate's playmaking skills, Caitlin Clark's fans sounded off on her on social media.
Others came to the defense of Hull, stating that her praise of Gray wasn't a slight at her Fever teammate and friend.
"What y’all expected Lexie Hull to say? That she seen better pass than that? She’s isn’t with Indiana Fever , she’s in unrivaled so she’s gonna talk good about her teammates," one fan said.
"Wait. Why are people mad at Lexie Hull?," Another fan said.
"If you can’t understand a player complimenting her current teammate, and if you see that as some kind of shot at CC, you need to check YOUR insecurity." Said one fan.
While Clark led the WNBA in assists last season, Gray is among the league's top playmakers. Her career-high for a season came in 2023, averaging 7.3 assists a night.
Lexie Hull to play alongside Caitlin Clark's rival Angel Reese in Unrivaled
Before Caitlin Clark fans were coming after Lexie Hull for her Chelsea Gray comments, their frustrations were towards Unrivaled. They weren't happy with the team she ended up on due to one player.
For the majority of last season, one of the biggest topics in the WNBA was Clark vs. Angel Reese. Their rivalry became famous in college and dragged over into their first season in the pros. Before Reese was shut down due to injury, the two were constantly compared with one another in the Rookie of the Year race.
Fast forward to now, and Hull has to share the floor with the player Caitlin Clark was constantly debated with last season. Reese is making her return to play in Unrivaled and will also be suiting up for Rose Basketball Club.
Seeing that Hull had nothing to do with the ROY race, playing with Reese shouldn't faze her. Instead, the sharpshooting guard will be focusing on being a key contributor for her team in this historic new league.
Hull and Rose will be in action on opening night (January 17), as they are set to face off against Vinyl in the second game of a double-header.
