Stephanie White and Angela Berry White are names Indiana sports fans will hear more in the future. Stephanie will coach Caitlin Clark and the Fever in the WNBA, while Angela will guide the IU Indianapolis Jaguars in women’s soccer. Although basketball is the most popular sport in the state, the former All-American Collegiate Player at George Mason will get her share of the coaching limelight.

Clark’s new coach went on Instagram to greet the Jaguars’ new lead tactician and wrote:

“Great to have Coach White down the street! Congrats my friend!”

Both of them are veterans in Indiana’s coaching circles. Stephanie played for the Fever from 2000 to 2004 before becoming an assistant coach from 2011 to 2014. She took over as the head coach from 2015 to 2016.

Angela started her coaching career as an assistant coach with the Butler Bulldogs, another big school in Indiana. From Butler, she took her talents to the Hoosiers from 1993 to 1997 before becoming the Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School soccer coach. Next season will be Angela White’s first head-coaching gig when she leads the Indy Jaguars.

Stephanie White is back for her second stint with the Fever. She led the Connecticut Sun to the semifinals in 2023 and 2024 before returning to Indiana to replace Christie Sides.

Stephanie White left Connecticut to be closer to her family

Some were surprised when Stephanie White and the Connecticut Sun went their separate ways after the 2024 WNBA playoffs. Under White’s guidance, the Sun were perennial championship contenders. Although they did not win the title during her stint with the team, experts deemed her leaving Connecticut to be the wrong move.

In an interview with ESPN’s Alexa Philippou, White explained her decision to end her Sun coaching tenure:

"It's not an easy decision to leave Connecticut, but I think the best one for my family and my career. … So this has not been easy. But certainly, at the end of the day, it's tough for me being away from my family. So from a professional standpoint and a personal standpoint, I feel like it's the best decision."

The Indiana Fever had a head-coaching vacancy following the dismissal of Christie Sides. White was rumored to be the one the franchise was going after. A few weeks after leaving the Sun, she became Caitlin Clark and the Fever’s new coach.

Stephanie White has seemingly found the situation she wanted. She is close to her family and guides a team that features the biggest draw in the WNBA.
