Even non-basketball observers were convinced that Caitlin Clark would be a star once she entered the WNBA. As predicted, this year’s draft promptly proved that point when the event reportedly garnered 2.45 million views, the most in league history. It was only a harbinger of things as the phenomenon called “Clarkonomics” was only starting in the pro ranks.
Roughly a month after the Indiana Fever made Clark the No. 1 pick, Wilson Sporting Goods announced it had signed her as a partner. The former Iowa superstar explained that she agreed to collaborate with the brand as Wilson basketballs were part of the “pivotal moments” of her career.
Fans couldn’t hold back their excitement when the partnership was announced. Most were impatiently waiting for the Wilson-Clark basketball collection to come out.
On Tuesday, a post on X, formerly Twitter, reported that the long-awaited sets were made available but sold out in a few hours:
Wilson emphasized in May that Caitlin Clark will have a big role to play in the manufacturing of its basketballs. She will take part in the testing, and evaluation of its products, particularly basketballs. It didn’t take long for Clark fanatics to swipe the brand’s basketballs clean off the inventory.
Caitlin Clark is the first female athlete with a Wilson signature basketball collection
A few WNBA players have collaborated with Wilson Sporting Goods before. In 2021, the controversial Liz Cambage, who was with the Las Vegas Aces that year, was signed by the brand. Cambage had an advisory role but might have been also asked to test the company’s basketballs.
In 2023, the brand added Kahleah Copper and Azura Stevens to endorse its basketballs. The two have appeared in the company’s ads, particularly rare collabs.
Caitlin Clark towers over any female athlete signed by Wilson. More than just testing and evaluating the products, she will also have the chance to design the basketballs. She is the only one with a signature basketball collection with the brand. Michael Jordan was the other athlete who had the same deal back then.
Fans are aware that a different set of Caitlin Clark basketballs will be released later in the year. Considering how the recent collection was gobbled off the market, the next one will likely be even more anticipated.
Clark has a strong chance of winning the Rookie of the Year award over rival Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky. If she gets the recognition and Wilson celebrates it with a new collection, those basketballs will be gone in a flash.
