Caitlin Clark has already established herself as one of the greatest rookies in WNBA history. And the Indiana Fever star has achieved yet another WNBA milestone on Sunday.
Caitlin Clark broke Seimone Augustus' 18-year-old record for the most points scored by a rookie in a WNBA season. The Fever rookie has now scored 761 points in 39 games this season, topping the 744 points Augustus scored with the Minnesota Lynx in 2006.
Clark entered Sunday's game against the Dallas Wings with 726 points. In a nail-biting win against the Wings, she scored a career-high 35 points. Clark broke the record with a 3-point shot in the third quarter.
When Augustus played in the rookie season, the WNBA teams only played 34 games in the regular season. But in 2003, the WNBA increased that number to 40.
Augustus played all 34 games in her rookie season. She averaged 21.9 points per game and was ranked top 10 in the MVP voting. She also averaged 3.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.
While Caitlin Clark might have taken five more games to break the record, she has shown a more complete offensive game in her rookie year. Aside from averaging 19.1 points, which ranks ninth, she is also leading the league in assists with 8.4 per game.
Caitlin Clark has had a historic rookie season with the Fever
Caitlin Clark did struggle at the beginning of the season, from turning the ball over to finding it hard to cope with the physicality of the game. But she has eventually found her footing and has broken numerous records.
Apart from setting the single-season total rookie points record, she also became the first rookie in WNBA history to record a triple-double.
Clark holds the WNBA record for the most assists recorded in a single game with 19 against the Dallas Wings in July. She also holds the record for the most assists by a rookie in a season.
Clark also leads the WNBA in 3-pointers made this season with 120.
