Before Caitlin Clark entered the WNBA, the league experienced increased yearly ratings. During her rookie season, however, the Indiana Fever guard's outings became record-setting events for women's sports.
One announcer applauded what Clark has achieved from a financial standpoint while pumping the breaks on some of her hype.
During the Fever's matchup with the Dallas Wings, Debbie Antonelli tried to set the record straight in regards to Clark. She admitted the rookie sensation has been big for the league economically, but shouldn't be considered the savior of the WNBA.
"The game didn't need saving," Antonelli said. "I don't know who came up with Caitlin is the savior. That's not true. What the game needed was a disruption in the economic marketplace, and that's what we're seeing here."
Caitlin Clark is far from the WNBA's only star, but she has helped the women's game break into the mainstream. After building a massive audience during her run in college, she's lived up to the hype thus far in the pros.
As the regular season comes to a close, the Fever are slated to appear in the postseason for the first time in eight years. Clark has played a big part in their success, averaging 19.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 8.4 assists.
Caitlin Clark adds another WNBA record to her growing list of accolades
During her rookie campaign, Caitlin Clark etched her name in the history books on multiple occasions. In the final stretch of the regular season, the Fever guard managed to add another achievement to her growing list of accolades.
In the WNBA, the area of Clark's game that has been displaying the most is her passing. As a rookie, she sits atop the league in assists per game at just over eight. Since play resumed following the Olympics, Clark has notched five games with double-digit assists.
During the Fever's matchup against the Las Vegas Aces on Friday, Clark dished nine assists in a near-triple effort. This outing resulted in history being made, as the rookie phenom now holds the WNBA single-season record for assists.
This is now the second assist-related record that Caitlin Clark has achieved in the WNBA. She also holds the single-game record after tallying 19 assists against the Dallas Wings in July.
Clarks' playmaking has been a driving force in Indiana reaching the playoffs this season. Because of her ability to read the floor at a high level, those around her have been able to thrive as well.
Coming into the league, everyone knew what a special talent Clark could be offensively. However, the ability to make those around her better is what has her on the fast track to superstardom in the pros.
