LA Sparks rookie Cameron Brink sounded the alarms on Tuesday night after going down with an apparent leg injury. The No. 2 pick in April's draft was having a notable first season in the WNBA and now it can be in jeopardy after the latest update on her health.
The LA Sparks announced Wednesday what multiple fans feared: Cameron Brink suffered a torn ACL on Tuesday.
"MEDICAL UPDATE: Cameron Brink suffered a left torn ACL in Tuesday's game vs. Connecticut Sun. Additional details will be provided at a later date."
This is one of the toughest injuries for an athlete, especially a basketball player. We've seen plenty of these cases in the NBA, including Kawhi Leonard of the LA Clippers, who missed an entire season because of this injury.
Brink is one of the most exciting rookies in the WNBA and she was putting on a notable first season in the league, even being considered a Defensive Player of the Year candidate.
This injury puts all the good things she might have accomplished this season on the line, and considering how hard this injury is for basketball players, the most likely outcome is that she misses the rest of the campaign.
How did Cameron Brink get injured?
Cameron Brink suffered the injury in the first quarter of Tuesday's night game between the LA Sparks and Connecticut Sun. The forward took the ball from halfcourt and drove to the basket.
She bumped into Brionna Jones as she entered the restriicted zone and fell to the ground, screaming in pain and unable to get up. Videos showed how her knee bent inward before she fell.
Brink had to be lifted off the court, leaving everybody worried about her condition. Sparks coach Curt Miller spoke on the potential long-term injury after the game, sharing an optimistic message about the future of the team but still wishing the best for Brink:
"Except for the 2019 season I’ve lost a starter to injury every single year I’ve been a head coach in this league. You just have to have the mentality of next person up and rally around it. We’re praying and hoping for the best for Cam."
Angel Reese also sent a message to Brink on social media, wishing her well.
“Prayers for my sweet girl! @cameronbrink22 🙏🏽”
Like many fans, we're waiting to see what's next for Brink and how serious this injury is.
