Canada vs France was back-and-forth to start, but the second quarter would end up being the story of the game. The French outscored their opponent 23-2 in this 10-minute stretch to establish a big cushion. From there, they were able to coast to a 21-point victory.
The thing that hurt Canada the most in this matchup was their failure to take care of the ball. They turned the ball over 25 times compared to just 10 turnovers for France. All of these empty possessions allowed the French to create separation in this matchup.
As far as individual performances go, Marieme Badiane led the charge for France. In 30 minutes of action, she notched a team-high 13 points to go along with six rebounds. Gabby Williams also had a strong performance, finishing with 12 points and eight assists on 50% shooting.
On Canada's side, Shay Colley did everything she could to try and secure her team a win to open the Olympics. She matched Kia Nurse with a team-high 11 points to go along with three rebounds, six assists and one steal.
After this loss, Canada will be back in action on Thursday against Australia. France will also take the floor that day, facing off against Nigeria.
