The ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles have deeply impacted the basketball community, with WNBA legend Candace Parker—who spent over a decade with the LA Sparks—sharing her heartbreak over the devastating news.
The wildfires, which began last week, are among the most destructive in the region's history. On Sunday, California Governor Gavin Newsom provided an update, highlighting four “Particularly Dangerous Situation” warnings issued by the National Weather Service in the past three months.
Candace Parker reposted the news on her Instagram Stories, adding a heartbreak emoji to express her sorrow.
As of Monday, the fires have claimed at least 24 lives, displaced thousands and scorched over 40,000 acres of land. More than 12,300 structures have been destroyed, with approximately 153,000 residents forced to evacuate their homes.
The most severe blazes include the Palisades Fire, which has consumed over 22,660 acres, and the Eaton Fire, which has burned roughly 14,117 acres.
Containment efforts for both fires remain ongoing, hindered by strong Santa Ana winds and extreme drought conditions. Nearly 1.5 million residents have faced power outages due to the fires.
Governor Newsom has called this fire season potentially the worst natural disaster in U.S. history when considering economic impact, with early damage estimates ranging from $135 billion to $275 billion.
Candace Parker joins Unrivaled commentary team
Despite the tragic news, Candace Parker has a bright opportunity ahead as she joins the broadcast team for the inaugural season of the Unrivaled 3x3 basketball league, created by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier.
Candace Parker, a two-time WNBA MVP, will serve as a commentator alongside Renee Montgomery and Lauren Jbara. Basketball Hall of Famer Lisa Leslie will contribute to select studio broadcasts.
Brendan Glasheen will be the play-by-play announcer, with Leslie and Sarah Kustok as analysts. Taylor Rooks, Allie LaForce, Stephanie Ready and Ros Gold-Onwude will provide sideline reporting.
Craig Barry, executive vice president and chief content officer for TNT Sports, expressed excitement over the lineup, stating:
"The additions of Candace, Renee, Lauren and Leslie will jumpstart our exciting coverage with some of the best and biggest talent in the sport. Their transcendent knowledge of the game and scope of experience are going to bring this new league to life in important and unexpected ways."
The Unrivaled season tips off on Jan. 17, featuring the Mist Basketball Club versus the Lunar Owls in the opening game at 7 p.m. ET on TNT, followed by Rose Basketball Club facing Vinyl Basketball Club at 8:15 p.m. ET.
