This year's WNBA Finals has become wrapped in controversy. Most of that comes from the questionable calls that took place, especially in Game 5. However, another thing that fans have taken issue with is Commissioner Cathy Engelbert wearing a New York City-themed dress during the final game of the series.
However, this particular controversy has briefly turned into comedy for some fans after Las Vegas Aces guard Sydney Colson posted a photo of herself wearing the same outfit. Colson posted the image on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday and quickly drew funny reactions.
Several WNBA fans joked about how the league commissioner would respond to Colson's antics.
"Cathy about to suspend or ban you from the “W” if you wear this," one person said.
"You about to get called to your GM’s office and the Commissioner’s office in the same week," one person tweeted.
"Cathy gonna send you a cease and desist," another person said.
Not all the reactions were jokes about Engelbert. Some fans praised Sydney Colson for her humor.
"You’re the funniest player in the league no BS," one person said.
"Syd really got this internet ish on smash," another person chimed in.
"Lmfaoooooo protect @SydJColson at all costs. #NationalTreasure," one person tweeted.
The New York Liberty won their first franchise title on Sunday against the Minnesota Lynx. Four quarters were not enough to decide this year's champions as the game went into overtime.
The Liberty outscored the Lynx 7-2 in the extra period to take home the championship with a final score of 67-62.
The New York Liberty ended Sydney Colson and Las Vegas Aces' two-year run atop the WNBA
The New York Liberty not only won their first title in franchise history, they also finally managed to topple Sydney Colson and the Las Vegas Aces.
That matchup was not only an opportunity for the Liberty to prevent an Aces three-peat, it was also a chance for revenge. Last season, New York reached the finals where they ran into Las Vegas. The Aces proved to be unstoppable as they won the series 3-1.
This year's playoffs gave the Liberty a chance to avenge that loss and they did. New York won the series 3-1, preventing the Aces from reaching their third straight final.
Sydney Colson did not play much of a factor in the series as she scored just four points over 18 total minutes during the four games.
