Breanna Stewart and Team USA have reached Paris for the 2024 Olympics. She became a mother while representing Team USA at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Now, Stewart has two children and nothing has deterred the WNBA star from playing at the highest level while juggling her parental responsibilities.
Speaking to the press in Paris, the New York Liberty star was asked about being a mother. Stewart said:
“Speaking as a mom, speaking for moms, especially for those who are here in the Olympics, we want to be great at both and really taking pride in that and making sure that whether we are with our kids or on the basketball court, I want to be the best I can be and show my kids that when they get older, they can do anything they want.
“For us as moms that are here in the Olympics, we just wanna continue to change the standard, change the narrative.”
Breanna Stewart is married to Marta Xargay Casademont, a former pro basketball player, and the couple shares two children. They have a daughter, Ruby Mae Stewart-Xargay, born in 2020 through surrogacy, and a son, Theo Josep Stewart Xargay, born last year.
Breanna Stewart flew from Tokyo Olympics to meet her newborn baby
Breanna Stewart has been a mother for four years, balancing both being an excellent player and a parent. In 2020, Stewart and her wife Xargay welcomed their first child just a day after Stewart and Team USA won their Olympic Gold medal in Tokyo.
The two-time WNBA champion wasted no time returning home to see her child, as she took the first flight from Tokyo to California after her win. Stewart told Melissa Bykofsky from What To Expect:
"I flew from Tokyo to Los Angeles and from LAX went straight to the hospital, basically."
The couple decided to have their baby through surrogacy because neither Breanna Stewart nor Xargay were ready to carry a child, given that they were both playing professionally.
"Neither Marta nor I were particularly ready to carry a baby, which is okay," Stewart said. "So we decided to use a surrogate for Ruby." [H/T What To Expect]
According to PEOPLE, Stewart is one of 10 mothers playing in the WNBA. She is the only mom on Liberty's roster. Despite that, she remains arguably the biggest force for the Liberty, looking for her third WNBA title and third Olympic gold medal.
