Chennedy Carter is one of the coveted WNBA free agents in 2025. She signed a one-year, $76.5K training camp contract with the Chicago Sky before becoming a key member of the team. Carter can play elsewhere if the Sky don’t match an offer.
On Thursday, Carter added fuel to the fire about her uncertain future. She reacted to a Russell Westbrook interview where the former NBA MVP called out his previous teams for playing him out of position.
Chennedy Carter wrote on X, formerly Twitter:
“ngl i felt this !!!! lol.”
Before arriving in Chicago, Carter was suspended by the Atlanta Dream for “conduct detrimental to the team.” She did not play for the Dream again following the suspension as she was traded to the LA Sparks in 2022.
The same issue that hounded Carter in Atlanta emerged while playing for the Sparks. She played 24 games, mainly as a substitute, before the team waived her in 2023. The LA Times reported that she was released for “poor conduct.”
The Chicago Sky took a chance on Chennedy Carter in 2024, which paid off for both parties. Chicago, though, dismissed former coach Teresa Weatherspoon and replaced her with Tyler Marsh. Carter found her footing under Weatherspoon, so the coaching change while she is a free agent might concern her.
Chennedy Carter said she wants to stay in Chicago, but GM Jeff Pagliocca was noncommittal
In Chennedy Carter’s last presser in 2024, she told reporters that she wants to be where she is wanted. According to Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune, Carter said:
“I love being here. I enjoyed the season. It was fun. It was special. If Chicago wants me back, I’m interested in coming back.”
Chicago Sky general manager Jeff Pagliocca was noncommittal about signing Carter again:
“She was very valuable. Obviously, she’s a player that can impact the game at the highest level in this league. She’s a player we’re going to make sure we keep an eye on and engage when it’s time.”
Per Poe, Chicago plans to offer the feisty guard a qualifying offer once teams are allowed to engage free agents. If another team offers a more lucrative deal and the Sky don’t match it, Carter is gone.
The No. 4 pick in the 2020 WNBA draft led the Sky in scoring last season with a career-high 17.5 points per game. She added 3.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.1 steals per contest.
With Tyler Marsh guiding the team, the Sky could be looking to improve their 3-point shooting. They were last in attempts (12.0 3PA) and ninth in efficiency (32.3%), areas where Carter badly struggled. Carter shot less than 1.0 attempts from deep last season and hit 29.0%.
Only time will tell if Carter will be back in Chicago next season.
