Chennedy Carter stirred up speculation on social media on Monday with a cryptic tweet emphasizing the value of layups, which many netizens interpreted as a subtle jab at Angel Reese. The post coincided with news that the Chicago Sky had declined to extend Carter a qualifying offer, making her an unrestricted free agent.

In her tweet, the 5-foot-9 point guard stressed that players who can consistently score layups efficiently should be regarded as belonging to a higher tier.

"I think the ability to consistently make layups just puts anyone in a different tier! so important to score easy!" Carter tweeted.

Carter's tweet quickly went viral, with fans speculating that it was an indirect dig at Sky superstar Angel Reese, whose layup efficiency ranked among the worst during the 2024 WNBA regular season. Reese attempted 321 layups last season, converting just 136, for a success rate of 42.4%.

"Shots fired," a fan wrote while reacting to Carter's tweet.
"It's on and popping now. Angel fired first. Chennedy fired back. Buckle up," commented another fan.
"SHOTS FIRED!!!! Ooooooohhhhhhhhh," a user wrote.
"Certain stans really mad over this but she didn’t even need to call names we all know who can’t finish those easy layups," a fan commented.

After fans speculated that her tweet was a dig at Angel Reese, Chennedy Carter issued a clarification to put the rumors to rest. The former Sparks guard emphasized that her post was solely intended to highlight her own ability to finish layups at an elite level.

"I just focus on me, that was literally abt me and how special of craft it is," the star guard wrote. "Not bothered at all by the spins. you telling me how you really feel tbh. had nothing to do with anyone but myself."

Chennedy Carter appeared to express her frustration with the Sky organization for declining to extend her a qualifying offer, making her an unrestricted free agent despite her strong scoring ability in the paint.

Last season, the Sky guard converted 123 of her 204 layup attempts, achieving an impressive 60.3% success rate, the second-highest among guards standing 5-foot-10 or shorter.

Chicago Sky elect to not prioritize Chennedy Carter despite dominant year

Chennedy Carter delivered a career-best performance during the 2024 WNBA season with the Chicago Sky. The dynamic guard not only led the team in scoring but also achieved personal bests in points, rebounds, steals and field goal percentage.

Carter appeared in 33 games, averaging 17.5 points on 48.7% shooting from the field, including 29.0% from beyond the arc. She also contributed 3.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game, showcasing her all-around impact on the court.

Despite Carter’s impressive performance, the Sky organization chose not to extend a qualifying offer to the star guard. Instead, the franchise recently extended qualifying offers to Dana Evans, Michaela Onyenwere and Nikolina Milic, leaving Carter notably omitted.
