Chennedy Carter’s tweet on Tuesday about “consistently” making layups sparked a social media storm. Many on X (formerly Twitter) believed she took a dig at former Chicago Sky teammate Angel Reese, who struggled with such shots. After reactions flooded her post, Carter clarified her comment, insisting that she was talking about herself and not anyone else.

In a recent X Spaces talk with analysts and fans, Carter clarified her message:

“Angel is a special player. I love watching her. This season, we had a great relationship and I don’t feel like the way things went on Twitter, it shouldn’t have went like that."
"I was specifically speaking of me. I’m a valuable player because the closest shot on the court is the layup or the mid-range and that’s what I specialize in doing."

According to WNBA stats, Angel Reese made 136 of 321 layups (42.4%), the worst in the league in 2024. At 6-foot-4, the Chi Barbie received significant criticism for her inefficiency. Fans routinely blasted her for missing shots that would have secured rebounds, a category she led last season.

Meanwhile, Chennedy Carter converted 123 of 204 layups (60.3%), the second-best mark among guards standing 5-foot-10 or shorter.

Last season, Reese and Carter showed great chemistry on and off the court. When the Chicago Sky rookie was asked about her partnership with the feisty guard, Reese responded:

“That’s the Chenn to the Barbie. I love Chennedy so much. She brings so much energy. She’s probably the fastest player I’ve ever played with in the league. … We have similar stories. We’ve been through a lot of things. We understand each other.”

Many believed Chennedy Carter's post was a shot at Reese after Carter failed to receive a qualifying offer from the Sky. A report also surfaced claiming that her “behavior” and former coach Teresa Weatherspoon’s leniency toward her contributed to a “toxic environment.”

Chennedy Carter is thankful for her stay in Chicago

Chicago Sky GM Jeff Pagliocca excluded Chennedy Carter from the list of players who received qualifying offers. She is now free to sign with any WNBA team as an unrestricted free agent.

Carter had this to say about her stint in Chicago:

“I came to a new organization. I was embraced. I was loved. I came from playing eight minutes to playing, doing a lot of things for the organization that I really love and respect for giving me the opportunity. The narratives of me being unhappy and this and that can’t be possibly true.”

The LA Sparks waived Carter in 2023 due to “poor conduct,” according to the LA Times. Chicago offered her a training camp contract in 2024, and she eventually earned a roster spot. Under Weatherspoon’s guidance, Carter was able to flourish.

Carter became a starter after Marina Mabrey was traded to the Connecticut Sun in July. She averaged a career-high and team-best 17.5 points per game last season.
