Amid an uncertain future in the WNBA, Chennedy Carter received a major award in China. The veteran guard joined the Wuhan Shengfan of the Women's Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA) after she finished the 2024 WNBA season with Chicago Sky.
She made an immediate impact on her new team, going off against opponents and showing off her skillset to finish as the best scorer (17.5 points with an average of 7.2 field goals) for a Sky side she joined via a training camp deal in Feb 2024.
Chennedy Carter shared a series of pictures on her Instagram stories, celebrating after being honored with the Oustanding Contribution Award. She also shared her thoughts on the honor and hyped up the moment.
"i received the biggest award given out tonight appreciate my teammates and coaches ❤️🤞🏼" she captioned one of the stories.
She also posed with the award and was deemed an "MVP" by coach Ally Wei.
It's been exactly two months since she joined Wuhan (Nov. 17) and Carter has had a terrific experience in China. In 15 games, she has averaged 30.7 points, 7.9 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 2.7 steals per game, shooting 50.4 percent from the field and 25 percent from the free-throw line.
After a terrific 2024 season, she is expected to leave the Chicago Sky, but it remains to be seen which team would make a swing for Chennedy Carter in the 2025 free agency.
Chennedy Carter among Sky players expected to leave the Sky
Amid a remarkable run in the WCBA, her future in the WNBA is anybody's guess. Chennedy Carter is one of three restricted free agents the Sky have on the roster, but Per Annie Costabile of the Chicago Sun-Times, she won't be offered an extension this offseason.
"The Sky have three restricted free agents: guard Dana Evans and Chennedy Carter and forward Michaela Onyenwere. Expect Pagliocca to extend offers to Evans and Onyenwere, while Carter will be free to test the market."
In her lone season in Chicago, Carter played 33 games, averaging 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds 3.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 48.7 percent from the field and 73.0 percent from the free-throw line. Her campaign wasn't excluded from controversy, especially after she shoved Caitlin Clark in the back.
With Teresa Weatherspoon out as the head coach, Sky's front office is cleaning up the house.
