Chennedy Carter isn’t on the initial list of invitees for the soon-to-open Unrivaled basketball league. The competition, the pet project of Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier and New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart, will start in January 2025. The 3x3 tournament will provide WNBA players with a lucrative avenue to play without taking their talents overseas.
The league will debut six teams with five players each. Of the 30 players, 10 have already been slowly but steadily announced to hype up the grand opening. Joining Stewart and Collier are the Las Vegas Aces’ Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young and Kelsey Plum. Jewell Loyd (Storm), Arike Ogunbowale (Wings), Rhyne Howard (Dream), Kahleah Copper (Mercury) and Angel Reese (Sky) are also on the roster.
Amid rampant speculations, Chennedy Carter posted this on X, formerly Twitter:
“chicago you just ughh dont make me cry being such an amazing experience”
The cryptic message had a follow-up:
“just for clarification because i continuously keep getting asked, i was not invited to unrivaled. i didn’t get picked”
Chennedy Carter must have felt the support from Chicago Sky fans who thought she deserved an invitation to the Unrivaled basketball league. After sitting out last season, Carter has been superb for the Sky in 2024. She is averaging 17.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.3 steals in 25 games.
More than the numbers, Carter has shown leadership, a never-say-die attitude, energy and grit to earn the support of fans.
Carter grabbed headlines this year following a shoulder check on Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark. The Sky guard received a common foul during the game but was later upgraded to a flagrant foul 1. The WNBA did not fine or suspend Carter for the said incident.
Chennedy Carter played only 11 games in her second season in the WNBA. She was suspended by the Atlanta Dream for “conduct detrimental to the team.” Many have wondered if Carter’s controversial history isn’t the reason she has been left off the Unrivaled basketball league.
Chennedy Carter’s teammate, Angel Reese, will be one of the biggest attractions of Unrivaled
While Chennedy Carter didn’t get an invitation from the Unrivaled basketball league, Angel Reese is one of its top draws. The Chicago Sky rookie already confirmed her participation and even shared on social media her excitement to play.
Napheesa Collier even responded to a fan’s question about why Reese got the invite despite her busy schedule:
“Angel is a business woman & knows the power of ownership. This is the one investment as basketball players we can control. Angel is part of this group that’s bringing in a ton of viewership, she should have long-term upside in the growth of basketball! Plus we’re in Miami #305Barbie”
The Unrivaled basketball league hasn’t released all the names yet of the participants. Many Sky fans are hoping Chennedy Carter’s name will pop up. As for now, they can be assured Chicago will be represented in Miami for the 3x3 competition.
