On Wednesday, the Chicago Sky broke ground on a new practice facility in Bedford Park. Absent from the ceremony was Angel Reese, one of the most recognizable faces on the team. The situation caught the attention of fans given the frustration Reese has shown online since the team fired coach Teresa Weatherspoon.
Despite her absence, and the frustration she's expressed on social media surrounding the firing, GM Jeff Pagliocca believes that the team's relationship with Reese is in a good spot.
While speaking with media members on Wednesday at the ceremony for the Bedford Park practice facility, CBS Chicago writer Matt Zahn relayed a quote from the GM in regards to the front office's relationship with Angel Reese:
“The franchise’s relationship with Angel is in a good spot.”
As Pagliocca explained, although Weatherspoon's tenure with the team lasted just one season, it's his hope that the next coach has a longer tenure with the team.
Of course, as many fans were quick to point out, while Pagliocca explained that the franchise's relationship with Angel Reese is in a good spot, the fact that she was absent from Wednesday's ceremony raises a number of questions.
Angel Reese posts cryptic message during Sky's ground-breaking ceremony
During Jeff Pagliocca's media scrum on Wednesday at the Chicago Sky's ground-breaking ceremony, Angel Reese posted a pair of cryptic messages on social media.
In one post, she wrote:
"Grass low snakes show..."
She was using the popular metaphor to describe untrustworthy people, likening them to snakes hiding in the grass.
In a follow-up, she then wrote:
"When they show you who they are the first time, BELIEVE THEM!"
Many fans took to be a veiled shot at the Sky for firing Weatherspoon after just one season. The timing of the posts has left some social media users confident that despite Pagliocca's comments, all is not well between the former LSU star and the Sky's front office.
Following the franchise's decision to part ways with Weatherspoon in late September, Reese posted a lengthy message on social media where she opened up on her heartbreak surrounding the firing.
In it, she wrote, in part:
"I’m heartbroken. I’m literally lost for words knowing what this woman meant to me in such a pivotal point in my life. She was the only person that believed in me. The one that trusted me.
"Many don’t even know what it’s like to be a black women in sports when nobody believes in you. You had a tough job. All the crazy circumstances that we went through this year & when your back was against the wall, you always believed."
So far no word yet as to who the Sky will target to replace Weatherspoon next season.
