Chicago Sky guard Diamond DeShields had to walk barefoot to practice after her shoes were stolen. DeShields shared the unfortunate news on her social media on Tuesday.
In a post on her Instagram stories, DeShields asked her followers if they ever went to work without anything on their feet. She shared that her shoes were stolen and had no idea where they went as she was heading into Sky's practice facility, the Wintrust Sports Complex in Bedford Park.
"Y'all ever had one of them days where you go to work and somebody steals your damn shoes or is it just me? I literally don't know where my shoes are. Like it's just one of those days," DeShields said.
It's unclear if Diamond DeShields reported the incident to the police or if she got any shoes at the Chicago Sky's training facility. DeShields and the Sky are preparing for their game against the Washington Mystics on Wednesday night.
They are trying to snap a three-game skid and maintain their position as the No. 8 team in the WNBA standings. The Atlanta Dream are closing in on them, but the Indiana Fever helped hold them off on Monday.
As for shoe-stealing incidents, it's not the first time it happened to a WNBA player. Sabrina Ionescu of the New York Liberty got her shoes stolen in their locker room after a game against the Las Vegas Aces. It was a rare edition of her first signature shoes.
Diamond DeShields returned to the Chicago Sky this season
Diamond DeShields was originally drafted by the Chicago Sky with the No. 3 pick in 2018. DeShields was a starter in her first two seasons in Chicago before being relegated to the bench during the pandemic season in 2020. She had a bigger role off the bench in 2021 when the Sky won their first WNBA championship.
However, DeShields wanted an opportunity to start so she was traded to the Phoenix Mercury in a sign-and-trade deal. She started and came off the bench for the Mercury, but only lasted there for one season. She was traded to the Dallas Wings but missed the entire 2023 season due to a knee injury.
DeShields entered free agency this offseason and opted to return to the Chicago Sky. She's averaging 4.0 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists this season and her minutes continue to decline with less than a month left before the postseason starts.
Her best game of the season was a 16-point performance in the second game of the season against the Dallas Wings. She has not scored in double-digits again since that game.
